New Jersey Colonial Royal Governor. He was born in New York. His father was Richard Morris (d. 1672). Richard Morris immigrated to New York through Barbados, after being part of Oliver Cromwell's army in the English Civil War of 1648. He purchased the first track of land in New York that became the basis for the "Morrisania Manor." The Morris estate, which became over 2,000 acres, would be the home of the Morris family for many generations. This property would eventually become known as Bronxland and now the Bronx section of New York City. In 1672 his father and his young wife died, leaving behind their infant son Lewis Morris. His father's brother ,Colonel Lewis Morris, also of Barbados, came to Morrisania to help manage his late brother's estate and raise his infant nephew. Eventually the infant Lewis Morris (1671-1746) inherited the estate of his father after the death of his uncle Col Lewis Morris and his wife, who had no children. Lewis married a woman named Isabella and then expanded and patented the Morrisania estate. He became the Colonial Royal Governor of New Jersey.
