Larry Shay
Birth: Aug. 10, 1897
Death: Feb. 22, 1988

Composer. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he was a songwriter most noted for the composition of the classic tune "When You're Smiling, The Whole World Smiles With You". He started his career as a piano student at the Bush Conservatory of Music in Chicago and wrote his first composition "Do You, Don't You, Will You, Won't You", published in 1923. In 1925, he joined the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, and remained a member for 63 years. He moved to Hollywood in the 1930s, was hired by Metro Golden Mayer, where he published over 300 songs for musicals, plays and films. A member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, he died in Newport Beach, California. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
