Note that while his tombstone says he died on Nov. 23rd, both the obituary below and the death record says it was actually the 24th.

The death record also says he was born in Giles Co., TN, but all other evidence indicates he was born in Limestone Co., AL. That's where his father lived from about 1830 to his death in 1871, and every census indicates George was born in Alabama.

Also, the rank of captain in the obit is in question.

CAPT. G. A. GILBERT DIES AT EVERGREEN

Well Known Confederate Veteran Expires Suddenly at His Daughter's Home

While visiting his daughter, Mrs. E. O. Hendricks and Mr. Hendricks at Evergreen, Capt. Geo. A. Gilbert of Coxey, retired farmer and one of the best known and most influential citizens of the county, died Saturday morning, Nov. 24th, of heart trouble and chronic intestinal nephritis, at the advance age of 84 years.

His remains reached Athens Saturday night and were carried to the home of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Williamson. Funeral services were held at Poplar creek church Sunday, the Rev. R. N. Moore, of the Methodist Church, pastor of the deceased, officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the family lot at that place. Grandsons of the deceased were the active pall-bearers. A large crowd was present and the floral offerings were lovely.

The deceased was married when quite young to Miss Lou Easter, who preceded him in death 17 years.

At the time of his death Capt. Gilbert was the ranking Confederate officer of this county. During the early part of the war he was a lieutenant in Capt. Thomas H. Hobbs' company and on the death of Capt. Hobbs he was promoted to the rank of captain and lead the company with gallantry until the war was over.

Surviving him are two brothers, one sister, two sons, R. L. and B. P. Gilbert, two daughters, Mrs. Geo. W. Williamson and Mrs. E. O. Hendricks and several grand-children and great-grand-children. Two daughters, Mrs. Lizzie Fielding and Mrs. Florence Strange and one son, preceded him in death.

The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved ones.
