Argil L. Haltom (Chippie), 78, of Flagler Beach, Fla. and formerly of Greencastle passed away Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010 at Flagler Pines.
Born Feb. 25, 1932 in Putnam County, he was the son of Modist and Nina Smith Haltom.

On Nov. 27, 1952 (Thanksgiving Day) Argil and Patricia Hess were married. They had 58 years together and two children, Mark L. and Marcia Ann.

He worked at an early age milking cows and mowing fields and lawns. Argil delivered the Banner newspaper and telegrams for Western Union.

After graduating from Greencastle High School in 1950, he went to work at Montgomery Ward's in Greencastle as a stock clerk.

Over 35 years at Montgomery Ward's he held many different positions. He was manager of the automotive department on North Jackson Street. When Montgomery Ward's closed the doors, an era ended.

Argil helped his father-in-law at the garage on Franklin Street, Hess Sales & Service, and with the construction of Hess Trailer Court in Greencastle.

Argil was a member of Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church and the Lions Club.

In 1947 as a 4-H'er he won grand champion dairy for his Ayrshire calf at the Putnam County Fair.

On Oct. 7, 1985 he and Patricia moved to Flager Beach. He enjoyed working, nature and the outdoors. Folks called him the "Lawn Ranger." The Haltoms traveled to 48 states, visiting friends and family often.

He loved to eat and play cards and dominoes. He was always ready to return to the beach for different, scenic views.

He was a quiet person, but made many lasting friendships. He will be missed. The neighbors loved to stop and chat with him.

Survivors include his wife Patricia; son Mark (Linda) Halton and daughter Marcia H. Voege; five grandchildren, Kimberlee, Jeremy, Cory, Ashley and Matthew; five great-grandchildren; cousins, two nieces, five nephews and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brother, Lester and Gilbert.

No funeral arrangements have been made. The Neptune Society is in charge.

The family plans to hold a memorial service in Greencastle in the spring of 2011.
