THELMA MANNING JOHNSON
Thelma Manning Johnson, formerly of Starmont Drive, Danville, died Monday, October 25, 2010 at Laurel Bay Rehab Center in Greenville, SC where she had been a resident for the past 6 years.
She was born in the Callands community of Pittsylvania County on April 17, 1919, the daughter of the late John Mark Manning and Annie Austin Manning Melton. She had lived all of her life in Dry Fork and Danville. She was a graduate of the former Callands School. Mrs. Johnson retired from Dan River, Inc. in 1981. She was of the Holiness faith and was a member of New Life Community Church. She was married to Gilbert F. Johnson who predeceased her.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by five daughters, Rachel Haslet and her husband, Charles, of Purcellville, Va, Joan Shelton and her husband, Doug, of Danville, June Reese of Ashville, NC, Peggy Johnson of Greenville, SC, and Cheryl Eastman and her husband, David, of Greenville, SC. Also, Thirteen grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren; one brother, John Manning of northern Virginia, and one sister, Marcella Goodings, of northern Virginia. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Elton Manning and Ennis Manning, and three sisters, Lola Gladstone, Bessie Yeatts and Beulah Sheffield.
Funeral services for Mrs. Johnson will be held Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 3:00.m. at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Denzel Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. View cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service and at other times, will be at the residence of Doug and Joan Shelton, at 209 Starmont Drive.
