Bertram Ross was the principal male dancer for Martha Graham for over twenty years. After serving in World War II, he studied at the Graham School under the GI Bill of Rights. In 1953 he replaced Graham's former partner and husband , going on to create many great roles such as he created leading roles in many of her works including Seraphic Dialogue (1955), Clytemnestra (1958), Acrobats of God (1960), Phaedra (1962), A Time of Snow (1968), and The Archaic Hours (1969). He taught for her, conducted rehearsals, and in 1966 assumed codirectorship of the company until 1973. Ross worked on Broadway and for films. He and his partner of 36 years, John Wallowitch, the song writer and performer, had a cabaret duo act. It became the subject of Richard Morris' 1999 film documentary, "Wallowitch and Ross: This Moment".
