Birth: Apr. 14, 1843
County Dublin, Ireland
Death: Mar. 31, 1922
Fort Myer Heights

Sergeant, US Army, 7th US Cavalry. Began military service on 16 Feb 1866, in Philadelphia, listing his previous occupation as a laborer. Promoted to Corporal at Camp Harney, Oregon, in Company H, 1st US Cavalry. Reenlisted on 13 March 1869 for Company I, 1st US Cavalry, and deserted in September 1873. Enlisted on 1 Oct 1873 for Company M, 7th US Cavalry in New York under the assumed name of Thomas Brown. Under the President's Proclamation of Amnesty for deserters, he surrendered on 17 Nov 1873, to resume his old name, and was given no punishment, since he had made up his lost time with continued good service. His reasons for deserting are not known. On 10 Jan 1876, he married Lena C. Eagan at Fort Abraham Lincoln, ND. They had two sons: John (born 27 Nov 1876) and Dudley (born 5 Jan 1879). On 14 June 1876, he was reduced from Sergeant to Private, for engaging in a fistfight with Captain Thomas French. He reenlisted on 2 August 1876 at St. Louis Barracks. His wife, Lena, died on 20 May 1882, and he continued in Troop G, 7th Cavalry and later, in Troop B. He retired with disability (rheumatism, heart disease, and total deafness) on 31 Dec 1891 at Fort Riley, Kansas, and was admitted to the Soldier's Home, Fort Myer, Virginia on 21 April 1896. In 1900, he married Josephine Fisher, and they had one son: Peter (born 10 Jan 1901). Cause of death: acute endocarditis.
