Death: Nov. 22, 1894

William was born on May 16, 1821. He went to Ashland College for one year then began to study law at the Rawson and Pennington Law Firm in Tiffin, Ohio. He was admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1845. He became a very much sought after public speaker. He was known as the "Silver-Tongued Orator". He was very good at getting men to enlist for the Civil War. He was active in organizing the 49th Ohio Volunteers and became its commander in 1861. William Harvey Gibson died on November 22, 1884 and had the most prestigious military funeral ever held in Tiffin. A monument in his honor still stands in front of the Seneca County Courthouse, in Tiffin. (submitted by the creator of this memorial)

I saw this autographed portrait at my grandparents' house when I was small, and never forgot it. Later, I found it in his biography, "Ohio's Silver Tongued Orator, Gen. Wm. H. Gibson" by David Dwight Bigger. I possess an original handed down in the family.

Gibson nominated William McKinley to run for President at a Republican gathering, but died before the nominating convention. Governor McKinley orated General Gibson's funeral. Both speeches are found in Gibson's biography. Gibson was a very influential and revered man in his time. McKinley went on to become the 25th President of the United States.

William Harvey Gibson and his wife, Martha Matilda Creeger Gibson had 4 children: Ella (Mrs. Dallas P. Dildine), William Ernest (FAG#69026831), Milton Harvey (FAG#69026828), and Jennie Matilda (Mrs. Edwin Bradfield)
