Birth: 1871
Ankara, Turkey
Death: Nov. 11, 1957
Delaware County
Pennsylvania, USA

She lived in Ankara, Turkey and was the daughter of Hagop Papazian according to one record, but other records list her maiden name as Bahadour. Her husband Bedros Tekian was a wealthy landowner in Ankara who rented parts of it out to many people of the town. All that land was confiscated at the beginning of the Armenian Genocide and Bedros died or was killed. Sourpik and her family had to flee their homeland and she settled with her daughters in Constantinople. All her children survived the genocide except the three who had died in childhood before it. Sourpik's son Hagop had been drafted into the Turkish army during the genocide and was thought to have been killed, but somehow he found them years later in France. Her other two sons had also been drafted but they fled instead of joining because they knew of the dangers of the oncoming genocide against their people. Sourpik's daughters moved to the United States in the early 1920s and she joined them there in 1930 after having lived in Paris with her sister Rosa Papasian (38 Rue Bisson)- which shows the Papazian last name connection. If Rosa was not married, it implies Sourpik's maiden name was indeed Papazian, but if it was a married name then the maiden name remains an open question, as their sister Sima listed her maiden name as Bahadour. Sourpik was known as Ya-Ya to her many grandchildren. She had a stroke in the 1940s and was largely incapacitated from it for the rest of her life. She is the only buried in the grave, though her husband's name is also on it. It was put as a memorial to him though his body had been lost since he was died during the Armenian Genocide. He was likely buried in the Ankara Catholic Cemetery which was destroyed after the genocide and turned into the headquarters of the Turkish National Radio Station. Sourpik's death certificate lists her birth year 1872 while her grave says she was born in 1871, not certain which one is right.
