He was born on June 8, 1925, in Shawneetown to the late Dan and Anna (Vickery) McKinley. On Sept. 13, 1947, he married Velma Pearl Woolard, and she preceded him in death on April 26, 2008.
John was a retired Country Companies insurance agent. He was a member of McKinley Avenue Baptist Church and the Harrisburg Rotary Club. He served as a Marine during World War II.
Surviving family members include his son, John E. (Rita) McKinley of Eddyville; granddaughter, Julie (Gary) Roper of Eddyville; three great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Nathan and Jason Roper and one due in February; brother, Andrew J. (Phyllis) McKinley of Clearwater, Fla.; sister-in-law, Clara McKinley of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brother, Charles and Ada McKinley; sister, Mary (Sylvester) Goldbeck; brother, Glenn (Wilma) McKinley; sister, Ruth (Red) Eubanks; brother, Daniel Gail McKinley; brother, William R. (Carolyn) McKinley; brother, Harrison McKinley; and a sister, Mattie (John) Rodville.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010, at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg. The Rev. Jr. Austin and the Rev. Ron Reed will officiate. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in Eldorado with military rites conducted by the Harrisburg American Legion Post No. 167. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oak Grove Church Cemetery.
