Eldest son of Just Heinrich Bock & Johanne Katharina Friederike Henriette née Frömke. His home village was then part of the Duchy of Brunswick. His father died before he turned 10 and his mother married Johann Conrad Achtermann.

Henry arrived in New Orleans on 17 Nov 1859 aboard the ship, Telemach, from Bremen, Germany with the Geldmacher brothers from Schlewecke. The three were enumerated with the family of the Geldmachers' aunt and uncle in the 1860 US census of Cape Girardeau County, Missouri.

Henry's younger brother, Heinrich 'Christian' Bock, arrived in the US later that year and they likely lived near one another throughout the US Civil War, though Christian eventually headed for Texas. Henry served in Company E of the Union-aligned 5th Missouri Volunteer Infantry Regiment.

Henry married Johanna Louisa Wilhelmina "Minnie" Jürries on 4 Nov 1867 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Pilot Knob, Iron County, Missouri, and they soon relocated to Will County, Illinois, where they lived the remainder of their lives. They were the parents of at least one daughter, Wilhelmine, and one son, Carl. Henry's mother and half-brother, Carl Friedrich Achtermann, arrived in the US in 1869 and were enumerated with them in 1870.
