Buddy Shuman ran in 29 Grand National (now Sprint Cup) Series from 1951 to '55. In 1957, NASCAR established the Buddy Shuman Award for outstanding contributions to NASCAR racing. The award was established in memory of early NASCAR Grand National driver and chief technical inspector Louis Grier "Buddy" Shuman, a beloved figure who died tragically in a hotel fire in 1955.
In 1924 Buddy's father contracted to haul the lumber from rail yard to construction site for 1 1/4 mile board track known at Charlotte Speedway, built in Pineville, NC.
