John Barney Mason Sr. was the son of Perez Mason and Martha Lois Barney. The families migrated from Swansea / Rehoboth, MA to Grafton, NH and then westward to Castleton, Rutland,VT and then on to Godfrey, Madison, IL. John Mason Sr and Anna Phillips were married in Littleton, Grafton, NH in 1800.
Perez Mason fought during the Revolutionary war for New Hampshire, and he and his wife Martha Barney Mason are buried in the N. Monroe Cemetery, Grafton, New Hampshire.
Anna Phillips' father John was also a Revolutionary war Patriot, fighting for New Hampshire.
John Barney Mason Jr. and Senior had neighboring farms in Godfrey, IL and for generations farmed the area. Later the farm was sold, and is now the Beverly Farms.
Per Historical Society, Castleton, VT:
For several years after his marriage, John Mason lived in Grafton, New Hampshire, but, about 1810 or a little later, removed to Castleton, Vermont, where he kept a tavern. In the autumn of 1838, in company with his son John, he removed to Illinois. The son went by land with the household goods, being seven weeks on the journey, while the father went by way of the Ohio River, with his own and his son's family. The father and son purchased adjoining farms and settled in Godfrey, Illinois.
