Civil War Union Army Officer. He served as Colonel and commander of the 19th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, which was part of the famous Iron Brigade. He was killed in action at the May 1864 Battle of the Wilderness. Samuel was originally interred in Sparr Cemetery, but his remains were removed to White Cemetery on October 20, 1894.
