Herman John Evers was born to John and Gesina (Schurmann)Evers at his parents' home one mile east and two miles north of Hildreth on June 25, 1911. Herman attended the District 33 country grade school. When he was nine years old his parents moved to a farm one-fourth mile west of Hildreth. Herman studied his Catechism lessons in German at St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Completion of the eighth grade and Confirmation in 1925 marked the end of his formal education.

At the age of 14, Herman began a full time farming career that has exceeded sixty years. During the Depression, in October, 1935, Herman drove a Model T west up the Platte Valley. He found seasonal work picking corn at the going rate of $1.00 per day. Permanent farm hand positions in the North Platte area followed. A neighboring farm hand, Clarence Helms, introduced Herman to his sister, Bertha Emelia Helms from Arapahoe, who was working in the North Platte area as a domestic aid. The ensuing courtship led to their marriage on June 14, 1942. Herman and Bertha made their home at the Evers family farm one-fourth mile west of Hildreth.

Two sons were born.

Herman and his father established a farming partnership in 1942 that endures to this day. The principal crops were wheat, corn, oats, alfalfa and prairie hay. Annimals raised included Hereford cattle, a small Holstein dairy herd, Yorkshire hogs, and chickens. As the years passed corn was replaced by milo and atlas was introduced to provide additional fodder for the cattle. Gradually dairy and hog production, which were completely manual operations, were reduced and eventually terminated.

Herman and Bertha had remained very close to traditional agriculture. Herman and Bertha moved into town when they retired.
