"Isaac Connely...His name appears in the list of taxibles in the Middle Ward, city of Philadelphia, 1780; value of estates: $28,000 (I suppose in Continental money)...He kept the 'Black Horse' Inn on Market Street...This was the street on which George Washington lived and he knew him well. Washington presented him with a cane and a picture, painted in Ireland; these are now in the possession of his gr.gr.granddaughter, Mrs E F Kerwick, of Portland, New York. In all deeds signed by him he wrote his name Connely but many of his descendants spell it Connelly."
(Genealogical Gleanings of Siggins and other Pennsylvania Families, compiled by Emma Siggins White, Kansas City, MO: Tiernan-Dart Printing Co, 1918, page 332) - Following page 332 is an illustration: ISAAC CONNELY 1747-1823, Copy of a Painting by Pierre Eugene DuSimitiere (seen on this page, at right).

"Isaac Connely was a very early settler in Allegheny (Township), locating in 1803...During the Revolution he lived in Philadelphia, where he kept the Black Horse tavern, a well-known hostelry...He was at one time a teacher of Latin and German and was a man of extensive reading. One of the first births of the township was that of his son, George W, afterward prothenotary, September 3, 1804. He was three times married...A clump of trees in a field on the farm of Alfred Lamb is pointed out as the Connely burying ground."
(History of Venango Co, PA, pub Chicago: Brown, Runk & Co, 1890, p.536 - Allegheny Twp)

"Stewart Run - Miss Justina Siggins of West Hickory visited the grave of Isaac Connelly on the Virgil Thomas property last Sunday afternoon."

The gravesite of Isaac Connely was restored and photographed in 2009.
