New York City Mayor. He served as the 95th Mayor of New York City, New York, from 1914 to 1917, being elected at age 34 (the 2nd youngest man ever to be elected to that office). He was sometimes referred to as "The Boy Mayor of New York." His father, James, was a Civil War veteran of the Confederate States Army (CSA) and two of his uncles had been killed in battle, also fighting for the Confederacy. After failing to be reelected, he joined the United States Army Air Service as a cadet during World War I. He completed his flight training in San Diego, California, and later obtained the rank of major. He was tragically killed en route to Gerstner Field, near Lake Charles, Louisiana while returning from a short training flight. Mitchel's plane suddenly went into a nose dive, causing him to be ejected from the aircraft (due to an unfastened harness), and fall 500 feet to his death. Mitchel Field on Long Island was named for him in 1918.
