Civil War Union Army Officer. He emigrated to New York, 1844 and enlisted in the US Regular Army joining the 2nd US Cavalry, in 1851. With the advent of the Civil War, he was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in the 5th US Cavalry, serving in the campaigns of (1861-62), with the regiment of regulars. He was then appointed by Governor John Andrew, Colonel of the 28th Massachusetts Irish Brigade. At the head of 28th Massachusetts, he participated in the Battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. On June 3, 1864, while leading his brigade at the attack on the entrenchments at Cold Harbor, Virginia, he was mortally wounded and died a few days latter. His commission to Brigadier General had just been made out by President Abraham Lincoln, but he died before it could be officially presented to him. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
