Emily was the daughter of Robert Scobee of Kentucky and Lydia Turner of Culpeper County, Virginia. Emily's mother, Lydia, was the daughter of Samuel and Anna Turner.
Emily's paternal grandfather, John Scobee, was an early pioneer in Ralls County, Missouri. He moved his family from Kentucky to some land he purchased about 25 miles away from Hannibal, Missouri.
Emily married James Ward Berrey in April 1845. After their marriage, the Berreys first rented land in Ralls County, then purchased 80 acres.
Emily and James were the parents of 9 children in all. The oldest ones were born in Missouri before the family moved in 1852 to a tract of timber land in Richwoods Pct., Calhoun County, Illinois. James built a log home for the family in Calhoun and worked as a farmer.
In 1883, the Berreys rented out their farm and moved to a home in Batchtown.
At the time of her death, Emily was 68 years, 10 months and 24 days old. She was survived by her husband, James, who passed away in 1894.
