THE DANVILLE REGISTER, Danville, Va., Tue., March 8, 1910, p. 2, col. 3 [edited].
Capt. George Washington Wells, of Pittsylvania county a gallant Confederate soldier, died Sunday afternoon March 6th, at his home near Mt. Cross, after a brief illness.
He was taken sick last Tuesday and death was due to an attack of pneumonia superinducing acute Bright's disease. The deceased, who was known to his friends as Capt. Billy Wells, was at the time of his death 66 years of age.
He was born at Whitmell, this county, and resided in that section all of his life.
At the outbreak of the war he was a captain of a boys military company at Whitmell in which our present Attorney General, Samuel W. Williams was first lieutenant, and although a youth of only seventeen years, he enlisted in the cavalry, under Jeb Stuart.
He participated in many of the larger battles until near the close of the war when he was seriously wounded in the thigh, necessitating him walking on crutches for a number of years and causing injuries which he did not wholly survive even to his dying day, and the pitiless ball that entered his frame forty-five years ago proved a constant and irritating companion and was buried with him yesterday. After the close of the war, being disabled for more active pursuits, taught school, but later took up farming and recently the manufacture of tobacco.
For several years and to the time of his death he operated a tobacco factory at Brosville,Va. He has held several public offices. The deceased is survived by his wife, who was before her marriage, Miss Eugenie Fulton, and four children, as follows: John F. Wells, Mrs. P. M. Comer, Mrs. John Booker, and Miss Annie Wells, all of this county. He also leaves a brother, John P. Wells and three sisters, Mrs. Pattie Bradner and Miss Eliza Wells of this county, and Mrs. R. C. Bradner of Charlotte County, Va. The funeral services were conducted from the home yesterday. Interment was made in the family burying ground.
