This is my Maternal Great Grandfather:
Milton was born in Bluefield WV. When Grandpa was just 11 years old he was told that if he wanted to eat he had to WORK!!! So, this young 4th grader dropped out of school and went to work in the West Virginia Coal Mines. He would spend over 50 years working in coal mines in West Virginia to Colorado, until he retired.
Of Course, with that many years spent in the bowels of the earth breathing in coal dust Grandpa was diagnosed with "Black Lung Disease" for which he received quite a settlement!!
He met and fell in love with at "First Sight" my great grandmother Matilda, whom he always called "Tilly;" they had twin boys and one girl. One of the twins died suddenly at just 9 years old and is buried in Colorado.
My Grandpa was a very Devoted Christian, and a proud member of the Lafayette Chapter of FreeMasons (although I do not know his "degree" level in the Masons).
Due to the many years spent inside dark coal mines without the light of day Grandpa LOVED to garden; his roses became his Pride and Joy. His yard was always full of rose bushes and flowers of every variety and color! He was so proud of his flowers, but especially the roses, and took meticulous care of them!!
Grandpa was a Gentle, Kind, Loving, and VERY Generous man!! Every time he saw his great grandchildren he would pull out his wallet and give EACH of us money!!! He was just a teddy-bear of a man and was one of the Sweetest Men I have EVER known!!!
Grandpa also Loved trains and would sit on our back porch just to watch the trains go by on the busy track behind our house. Because of his love of trains I also loved trains as a child...and still do to this day.
Grandpa, I Sure do Miss You and Love You SO Much!! Until We Meet Again...
