Civil War US Congressman. He was elected as a Republican to represent the 29th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from March 4, 1859 to March 3, 1863. During the First Battle of Bull Run (July 21, 1861) he joined the numerous politicians and Washington, DC citizens who had come to watch the battle, and was caught up in the stampede when the Southern forces routed the Union Army. He was captured by the Confederates in the confusion, and spent 6 months in Richmond's Libby Prison before being exchanged. His release from Confederate prison was effected by exchanging him for Union-held prisoner Charles J. Faulkner. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
