Thomas Shiercliffe/Shircliff of Whitley Hall, descendant of the Shiercliffes that originated from the hamlet of Shiercliffe on the northern side of the Don valley between Wadsley and Pitsmoor. Master of the Game for the Lords of Hallamshire.

Son of Robert Shiercliffe and Mary Carr, grandson of Richard Shiercliffe and Richard Carr. Great great grandson of Sir Thomas Shiercliffe, 'Master of the Game for the Lords of Hallamshire' (Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk and George Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury) appointed by Henry VII. Born about 1573.

Husband of Mary Pawson, daughter of Thomas Pawson of Windmill Hill in York. They were married 08 Dec 1601 at Ecclesfield, and had eight children:
* Nicholas Shiercliffe 1603-1669, married Jane Eyre daughter of George Eyre of Hyssop
* William Shiercliffe 1606-1648, of Trinity college, Cambridge
* Lt Thomas Shiercliffe 1620-1661, married Mary Wilson
* John Shiercliffe 1609-1663, on the 1638 Unity, died in Maryland
* Elizabeth Shiercliffe 1602-1628
* Mary Shiercliffe 1610-1631, wife of William Savage
* Anne Shiercliffe 1609-1635, wife of Thomas Wright
* Margaret Shiercliffe 1614-1646, died umarried

Thomas was a tanner. His father, Robert, had established the family's position in the Whitley Valley with his purchase of Hoyle House, just 300 yards from Whitley.

Thomas purchased from the Parker family on 09 April 1622, which continued to be the residence of his descendants until their extinction by the death of John Shiercliffe in 1789 without male issue. Also of Holehouse and Ecclesfield Hall. The 1622 court baron roll listed Whitley as including a smelting house, eight fields, two acres of woods, four cottages, gardens, orchards and one tanyard. Thomas had a will that listed properties in Billingley, Thurnscoe and Wombwell. There is what is termed a 'boathouse' behind Whitley with the man made lake with man made island just large enough to host a tree. The boathouse sports the initials TS and MS and the year 1630.

Thomas left Whitley and its estate to his youngest son, Thomas. The two older sons were given university educations at Oxford and Cambridge, Nicholas became a physician.

Buried in the south chancel floor of Ecclesfield's St Mary's church. The nearby church window showed his great great grandfather, Thomas 'Sherclyffe', his two wives, seven sons and four daughters, all kneeling anbd surrounded my 'many harts and beasts of game and fowle of warrant.' In another window, Thomas was shown kneeling with a hunting horn around his neck, a sword by his side, over his shoulder a long bow, and under his girdle five arrows, then a bloodhound with a collar and leash. The windows were destroyed by the Puritan reformers in 1643, but not before they were seen and recorded by Roger Dodsworth when he visited the church in 1628.
