Dr. Spires attended Oregon State College and the University of California Dental School. After practicing denistry in his home town (Myrtle Point, OR), he moved to San Pedro in 1927.
Dr. Spires was appointed to the Los Angeles Harbor Commission in April 1954 and served seven years. He was a former president of the San Pedro and Peninsula YMCA Board of Managers. In 1960, he received the Los Angeles YMCA's highest honor by having his name entered in the Golden Book of Distinguished Service. In addition, Dr. Spires twice headed the San Pedro Optimist Club, later becoming district governor and then vice-president of Optimists International. He was also active in many other organizations. He retired in 1981.
He is survived by a son, Tom of Torrance, two grandsons, two granddaughters and one great-grandson. An adopted son, Jerry Spires, passed away in May 1978 in Dana Point, Orange Co., CA.
Elton's grandmother was Sarah Graves Fosdick Ritchie Spires, a survivor of the Donner Party.
