George L. Bowers, who died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Howard E. Gates, at South Lakemont, will be buried today following services at 12 noon at the home and the body will be taken to Yellow Creek where further services will be held in the Reformed church. Interment will be made in the church cemetery.
He was 77 and was born at Yellow Creek. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ellen Bowers, his daughter and two sons, W. A. Bowers, of Jeannette[sic], and C. H. Bowers, of Portage. One brother, Albert, of Everett, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary L. Zimmerman, of Yellow Creek, and Mrs. Belle Fluke, of Huntingdon, also survive.
George was married first to Malissa Irving on March 5, 1874 in Riddlesburg, Bedford County. Malissa was born about 1856, probably in Wheatfield Township, Indiana Co, Pennsylvania. In 1870 Malissa was residing with her mother, Charlotte Skiles Ressler, and her step father, Daniel Ressler, in Yellow Creek. Malissa died at Gallitzen, probably in 1878, leaving George with two small children: Charlotte born 1874 and William born 1876. No grave marrker has been found in Gallitzen for Malissa. By 1880 George had moved back to Yellow Creek, and was living with his mother. He married Ellen Smeltzer in 1885, and they had one child, Homer, in 1886.
