| Birth: | Nov. 10, 1813 | | Death: | Oct. 6, 1897 |  Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. He was a member of the Iowa Territorial House of Representatives in 1843 and secretary of the State Constitutional Convention in 1846. In 1847, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirtieth and Thirty-first Congresses, serving until 1850. At the start of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army and was commissioned a Captain in the 1st Iowa Volunteer Cavalry in July, 1861. Promoted Colonel in command of the 1st Iowa, in June, 1864, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war, he was re-commissioned Captain in the 7th Cavalry, Regular Army and retired from the Army in December, 1875. He relocated to Tacoma, Washington, where he remained until his death.
