Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. At the start of the Civil War, he was elected a Ohio Probate Judge but resigned to join the 14th Ohio Infantry as a Private in April, 1861. He served throughout the war, promoted through the ranks to Lieutenant Colonel, participated in the Battle of Franklin, the Carolinas Campaign and the final major conflicts of the Eastern Theater. For conspicuous service, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers in June, 1865. After the war, he moved to Toledo, Ohio and became the editor of the Toledo Daily. He was elected as a Democrat to the Sixtieth and to the six succeeding Congresses, serving 1907 to 1921 and reelected to the Sixty-eighth Congress, serving 1923 to 1925. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
