Served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 122nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services". He became a prominent Illinois lawyer after the war, and was elected to represent Illinois 16th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1895 to 1897.
