Served in the Civil War first as Colonel and commander of the 9th Michigan Volunteer Infantry, then as Provost Marshal General for the Department of the Cumberland. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on May 22, 1865 for "gallant, faithful, and meritorious services". After the war he served as United States Marshal for the Eastern District of Michigan from 1866 to 1869, and as United States Minister to Belgium from 1888 to 1889.
