Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. Born in New York City, New York, he was studying law when he joined the Union Army at the start of the Civil War. Commissioned a Captain in the 1st Illinois Volunteer Cavalry, he later rose to the rank of Colonel in command of the 94th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "Gallant and meritorious services in the siege and reduction of Spanish Fort, Ala.". After the war, he was admitted to the bar, practiced law in Bloomington, Illinois and was a member of the State Senate 1869 to 1873. In 1872 he was elected as a Republican to represent Illinois' 13th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1873 to 1875. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
