Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. At the start of the Civil War, he was the U.S. attaché at Vienna when he returned to serve in the Union Army. Commissioned a Captain, in the 54th New York volunteers, he served on General Stahl's staff, 1862 to 1863. Promoted Lieutenant Colonel in 1864, he commanded the 2nd Regiment, U.S. Colored Cavalry in actions through Virginia. On August January 15, 1865, he led the assault on Fort Fisher, capturing the Confederate post and was severely wounded loosing an arm. For his gallantry in this action, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on March 25, 1865. After the war, he served as U.S. Minister to Costa Rica.
