Served in the Civil War first as a Captain in the 20th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, then as Colonel and commander of the 75th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "distinguished and gallant services".
