| Birth: | Aug. 17, 1827 | | Death: | May 28, 1889 |  Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. He was a Polytechnic Engineer when he volunteered to enlist into the Union Army of the Potomac as a Private at the start of the Civil War in 1861. Promoted through the ranks to Major, he was assigned as a Colonel in the US 5th Cavalry. After he distinguished himself at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US volunteers and took transports at City Point for Washington, D. C., for the remainer of the war. After the war, he became president of the Crown Point Iron Company and was elected as a Republican to the Forty-sixth and Forty-seventh Congresses, serving 1879 to 1883.
