| Birth: | Sep. 20, 1833 | | Death: | Oct. 30, 1917 |  Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. At the start of the Civil War, he was a lawyer in practice at Athens Ohio, when accepted a commission as a Major in the 18th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Promoted through the ranks to Colonel, he commanded the 18th Ohio for the entire war and was breveted Brigadier General of US Volunteers for distingished service in March 1865. After the war, he served in the Ohio State House of Representatives and was elected as a Republican to the Forty-ninth, Fiftieth, and Fifty-first Congresses, serving 1885 to 1891. In 1893, he was reelected to the Fifty-third Congress and to the six succeeding Congresses, serving until 1907.
