Elizabeth (Vanik) Semuta

St. John's G. C. Church, this city, was the setting on Saturday for the marriage of Miss Pauline Semuta, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Semuta, of 639 East Diamond avenue, to John S. Szerwiel, of Ontario, California, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Serwell, of Manville, N. J. Rev. Thomas Gran officiated at the ten o'clock mass. St. John's choir, under the direction of Professor Peter Roman, sang the responses during the mass. The altars were decorated with gladioli.
Escorted by her father, the bride wore a French imported Chantilly lace gown over taffeta with a fitted bodice, sweetheart neckline, trimmed with pearls, Queen Anne collar, and long pointed sleeves. Her hand-rolled French veil was attached to a headband of lace adorned with pearls. She carried a Mother of Pearl prayer book covered with roses, pompons and stephanotis.
Mrs. John Gresh, of Harrisburg, was the matron of honor and Thelma Rock, of Hazleton, the maid of honor. They wore white embroidered organdy gowns over pick and green taffeta, respectively, with sweetheart necklines, fitted bodices, and full skirts. They carried prayer books covered with roses and pompons and wore matching veil headpieces with flowers.
The bridesmaids were Joanne Ondrey, of Manville, N. J., Mary Panco, and Margaret Koslop, this city, and Martha S. Timko, of Freeland. They wore white embroidered organdy gowns with underskirts of orchid, yellow, aqua, and blue taffeta, respectively. All carried payer books.
Sheila A. Szerwiel, of Ontario, Calif., and Joanne Panco, of this city, were flower girls. They were attired in white embroidered organdy gowns over green taffeta and carried small prayer books. The best man was Joseph Gombeda, of Manville, N. J., and the ushers were John Ondrey, of Manville, N. J., Paul Mock, of McAdoo; Emil Paulshock, Frank Kukowski, and Joseph Semuta, of this city. Thomas Serwell, of Manville, N. J., was ring bearer.
Following a reception at St. John's Hall, the couple left on an extended tour across the country. They will reside in New Jersey. The bride, a graduate of the Hazelton High School, Class of 1944, attended McCann's School of Business and was employed by Lee-Jay Sportswear Co. The groom attended the American Dry Cleaners' Institute in Hollywood, Calif., and is employed in the trucking trade in New York City.
Guests attended the wedding from the following cities: Ontario, Brentwood, and Los Angeles, Cal., New York City; Trenton, Newark, Raritan, North Branch, Somerville, Bound Brook, Burlington, and Manville, N. J.; Long Island; Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, and Bethlehem, Pa.; Baltimore, Md.; and Norfolk, Va.

Paulene (Semuta) Szerwiel, 61, Manville, N.J., died suddenly at her home Wednesday. She was born in Hazleton, daughter of the late Peter and Elizabeth (Vanik) Semuta. For the past 22 years she had worked as the assistant tax collector for the borough of Manville. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 2290, Manville, and a communicant of Sacred Heart Church, Manville.
Preceding her in death were her husband, John Szerwiel, in 1984, and a son, Alex T. Surviving are three daughters, Denise E. Gardner, Somerset, N.J.; Nadine M. Szerwiel, Manville, N.J.; and Sheila Ann Reynolds, Alvaredo, Texas; a brother, Nicholas Semuta, Hazleton; four sisters, Julia Semuta and Emily Kakaley, both of Hazleton; Elizabeth Rugiero, Lansford; and Margaret LaBuda, Bethlehem; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. from the Fucillo & Warren Funeral Home, Manville, N.J. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Sacred Heart R.C. Church, Manville, at 10 a.m. Entombment will take place at Lake Nelson Memorial Park, Piscataway, N.J. Friends may call today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
