Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. He led an varied and adventurous life before the Civil War, having been a journalist in New Orleans, Louisiana and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a steamboat operation along the Mississippi River, a gold miner in California, and as a principle founder of the Cambria Iron Works in Central Pennsylvania. At the onset of the Civil War, he enlisted in the 3rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, a three-month enlistment regiment, serving as a 1st Lieutenant and Regimental Quartermaster. When that unit's enlistment was up, he recruited the three-year service 54th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry regiment, and became its Colonel and commander. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious conduct as the Battle of Piedmont, Va., June 5, 1864". He was elected as a Republican to represent Pennsylvania's 17th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives on two different occasions, serving first from 1877 to 1879, then from 1881 to 1887.
