Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Senator, Idaho Governor. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was a lawyer in practice when commissioned a Captain in the 13th Kansas Volunteer Infantry. Promoted Colonel in 1863, he commanded a brigade with the Seventh Army Corps for the entire Frontier Campaign. For his military service, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers in 1865. After the war he settled in Arkansas and was justice of the supreme court of Arkansas, 1867 to 1871. In 1871, he was appointed Governor of Idaho Territory by President Ulysses Grant serving until 1875. He relocated to Colorado in 1876, was elected judge of the fourth judicial district, serving until 1880 and was a member of the State House of Representatives in 1882.
