Served in the Civil War in 60th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, being commissioned its Lieutenant Colonel on February 17, 1862. He was advanced to Colonel and commander of the unit on April 4, 1863. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "galantry and meritorious services during the war".
