PHILADELPHIA, PA - Joseph Rohan "Joe" Lex, 85, died in his sleep in Philadelphia, PA, on Monday, October 4th, during recovery from a recent fall.
Mr. Lex was born in Springfield, IL, on August 1, 1925 to John Adam Lex and Marie Catherine Rohan Lex, the third of four children. Brothers John E. Lex (Springfield, IL), and Francis J. Lex (Shreveport, LA), and sister Mary Catherine Ritter (Phoenix, AZ) preceded him in death. He was a 1943 graduate of Cathedral Boys High School and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He married Margueritte Stanley on April 27, 1946, and they remained together until her death in Kenner, LA, in 1982. In 1983 he married Betty Lee Tinsley Lex, formerly of Springfield, and they remained married until her death in 2002 in Jackson, MS. Both wives are buried in Springfield, IL. After the death of his second wife, he moved to Philadelphia to be near family and traveled with his oldest son to France, Spain, Poland, Ireland, Puerto Rico, and numerous cities within the USA.
Mr. Lex worked more than 35 years for Cargill, Incorporated, as a grain elevator manager, first at their Chicago plant, then in Lockport, Havana, and Tuscola, IL, before taking on management of the building of a large mid-river grain exchange boat at Convent, LA. In addition to his work, he was a square dance caller, ballroom dance instructor, auctioneer, clock repairman, tax preparer, and broker in table silver. He frequently sang and acted in local church productions in Illinois.
He is survived by two sons, Joseph R. (Andrea June Urban) Lex Jr., MD, of Philadelphia, and Mark Stanley (Karen C.) Lex of Redding, CA. Two other sons died in infancy. He also leaves four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, one step daughter, Susan Lee (Luke Lee) Gaule of Springfield, and numerous nieces and nephews. A sister in law, Kaye Lex, lives in Shreveport, LA, and a brother in law, George Stanley, in St. Cloud, MN.
Visitation: 4-7 p.m. Monday, October, 11, 2010 at Staab Funeral Home with a prayer service at 4 p.m.
Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at St. Joseph Church with Monsignor Thomas Holinga officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
