Appointed Major in Colonel Charles Stewart’s Battalion of Minutemen 1776. Appointed Brigade Major in the Monmouth County Militia, 1776, and was made Major of Colonel Nathaniel Heard’s battalion. He was later promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and brigadier major at Monmouth. Elected as a Delegate to the Continental Congress, 1779 but declined to serve. Was Acting Governor of New Jersey in 1794 and elected as a Federalist to the Fourth Congress from 1795 to 1797.
