| Birth: | Oct. 19, 1835 Schuyler County New York, USA | | Death: | Mar. 10, 1897 Portland Multnomah County Oregon, USA |  US Senator. He served two terms, 1883 to 1895, as a Republican senator from Oregon. He attended the local New York schools and then studied law at Genesee Wesleyan Seminary. He was admitted to the bar in 1861 and set up a practice in Schuyler County, New York. That same year he enlisted with a group known as the Oregon Escort, a company established by Congress to protect immigrants crossing the continent to the Pacific coast against Indians. Upon reaching Oregon he settled in Portland and decided to enter politics. He served as city attorney from 1864 to 1865; United States District Attorney from 1865 to 1868; and four terms in the state senate. During his term as US Senator, he served on the Committee on Public Lands and was chairman of the Committee on Coast Defenses. He was unsuccessful in his bid for a third term and resumed the practice of law in Portland.
