Son of Captain (Rev. War) John Morton and Lucinda Blakely Morton, Richard moved to Kentucky with his widowed mother and siblings in 1798 when he was only four years of age. In 1825 he married Cynthia "Sallie" Hon, daughter of Joseph P. Hon, Jr. and Eleanor Cave Hon. They had nine children. Following Sallie's death in December, 1843, Richard married Elizabeth Bartlett in 1845. They had one son. Richard and his father-in-law, Joseph Hon, were instrumental in establishing a Baptist Church on the South Fork of Red River which would eventually become a part of the Restoration Movement founded by Alexander Campbell and Barton W. Stone. Richard was a farmer.
