Leroy Vanness was born in Reily Township of Butler County, Ohio, on July 24, 1893, to Charles V. Vanness (1863-1938) and Etta Mary (Pierson) Vanness (1868-1936). During World War I, Private Leroy Vanness served in the U. S. Army's 158 Depot Brigade from April 25 to July, 6, 1918, and from September 9, 1918, until July 11, 1919, in Company "F" of the 309th Engineers of the American Expeditionary Forces (A.E.F.) on the Western Front in France. One week later, on July 18, 1919, one week after his release from Company "F" of the 309th Engineers, Private Leroy Vanness was honorably discharged from the U. S. Army.

After the war, on DATE in Butler County, Ohio, Leroy Vanness wed Susan C. Hann. Together Leroy and Susan C. (Hann) Vanness raised three children: Alice Lee Vanness (Naron, 1922-2014), Calvin Hann Vanness (1926-2006), and Myron Roy Vanness (1928-2008), whose Find a Grave Memorials are linked below to each other and to those of their parents. As new documentary evidence is discovered, Bruce Garver will enlarge and revise his "bio" that he began to compose on March 24, 2021, for Leroy Vanness.
