James H. Woolworth, a civil war veteran and resident of Sioux City,IA for the last 41 years died this morning at 7 am in his home, 4430 Springfield ave. He had been ill several months,but was not in a critical condition until saturday noon. He was 72 years old.
Mr. Woolworth was born May 23, 1843 in New York. He enlisted at the age of 19 in Company A of the Eleventh Wisconsin regiment of Infantry. He served throughout the entire war and was in the majority of the important battles. He was ill for several months and unable to stay on the firing line. He attended to the G.A.R. convention in this city in June, but because of his health found it impossible to take any active part in the celebration.
Twenty-five of the 41 years he spent in Woodbury Co.(Leeds) he lived on his farm in James,IA. For the last 16 years he has lived at his present residence. For 30 years he has been a member of the Masonic order and for a quarter of a century he belonged to the Odd Fellows.
Surviving is his wife,Dorothy, whom he married March 11, 1864 and eight children. Four daughters and four sons. The sons James Jr.,Frank, Robert and Sam. Daughters, Mrs. Kate Luce, Rose Savage, Nellie Mongomery of Sioux City,IA and Mrs. Eva Wilson of Miller,SD.
Funeral services will be held Wed afternoon at 1pm at the residence, Rev I.G. Smith, pastor of the Olivet Presbyterian church in Leeds, will officate. Burial will be in Floyd Cemetery.
