William Russell Burk, 79, of College Park, Georgia, formerly of Canton, died Sunday, October 20, 1996, at South Fulton Medical Center in Atlanta, Ga. Born April 6, 1917, in Lewistown, he was a son of Elmer and Merle Turner Burk. He married Margaret H. Dudgeon on April 29, 1939, in Lewistown. She survives. Mr. Burk had lived in Canton for 26 years before moving to College Park, Ga., in 1970, where he retired in 1981 with 33 years of service with the U. S. Postal System. While living in Canton, he servied in the U. S. Navy and was active in the affairs of Canton. He was past Commander and Finance Officer of the American Legion Otto Bruner Post #170; past president of the Canton Chapter of The Lewis County Historical Society; past president of the Lewis, Knox, Clark and Scotland Counties Post Masters Study Group; Board member of the First District National Association of Post Masters. He was included in the 1967 edition of "Outstanding Civic Leaders of America", was active in the PTA, the Methodist Church, Civil Defense and local Red Cross. He was a graduate of Lewistown High School and attended Gem City College. Survivors also include two sons, Ben Burk of Griffin, Ga., and Kennon Burk of Jonesboro, Ga.; one brother, Harold Burk, Daytona Beach, Fla.; a nephew; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Wilbur and Kenneth Burk. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 25, at Arnold's Funeral Home in Canton, with the Rev. Susan Cox-Johnson officiating. Music was furnished by Karla McReynolds and Larry Dudgeon.
