| Birth: | Jul. 5, 1781 | | Death: | Jul. 5, 1826 |  Explorer and adventurer. Founder of the city of Singapore, and also of the Zoological Society (London Zoo). An anti-slavery pioneer, he was refused burial inside the church at Hendon by the then vicar, whose family had made its money in the slave trade. However when the church was extended in the 1920s his tomb was incorporated into the body of the building. (bio by: David Conway)
