Patricia Ann (Leatherwood) Benson
June 14, 1943 – October 4, 2010
Patricia Ann Benson, 67, passed away Monday, October 4, 2010 at St. Joseph Regional Health Care Center in Bryan. A memorial service is set for 2 p.m. Thursday, October 14, at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.
Pat was born June 14, 1943 in Goldsboro, North Carolina to Frank Edwin and Nena (Holt) Leatherwood. She married C.W. Benson on May 23, 1987. She was the mother of one son, Craig Cumberland. Pat was a long-time resident of the Bryan/College Station area.
She worked as a supervisor at the Clinical Pathology Lab at the College of Veterinary Medicine of Texas A&M University for 30 years. She was frequently consulted on blood chemistry techniques and served on an advisory board for Abbott Laboratories. Pat co-authored numerous published scientific papers.
Pat and husband Chris carved the 74 Ranch from the Texas landscape into a successful ranching operation. Additional interests were polka dancing, traveling, needlecraft, and sitting in her porch swing enjoying the beauty of nature. She was very active in supporting the American Cancer Society and Relay For Life activities.
Her parents, Frank Edwin and Nena (Holt) Leatherwood, precede Pat in death.
She is survived by her husband of 23 years, C.W. Benson; sons and daughters-in-law, Craig and Wendy Cumberland of California, Britt and Susanne Benson of Utah; daughter and son-in-law, Fawn and Jack Simpson of Texas; sisters and brothers-in-law, Diana and Jerry Turner of Mississippi, Nenette and Clark Measels of Tennessee; brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Judy Leatherwood of Mississippi; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Zara and George Reis, Char Starr, Alice Berry, Jane and Curt Reed of Colorado, and Nan Sanders of Indiana; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Carl and Brenda Benson of Texas; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, a wealth of cousins, nieces, nephews and special friends.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of choice.
