George T. Backus, a native of Russell, and a resident of Pearl street, this village, passed away at the family residence Wednesday evening, aged 79 years. About ten weeks ago Mr. Backus while standing on a ladder, resting against the house, suffered a bad fall in which he sustained a fracture of the hip. He was taken to Hepburn Hospital, Ogdensburg, where he remained several weeks. Following his return to his home here he did not improve, and death came after a gradual decline.

Mr. Backus was a member of one of the fine old St. Lawrence county families, members of which were long distinguished here and in Brooklyn and New York City. He was the son of the late Erastus and Sophronia Palmer Backus of Russell, one of a family of several children, and was born in Russell Sept 25, 1849. His home was in that town and Canton on farms, until he came with his family to his village. On April 5, 1870 he was joined in marriage with Miss Josephine Doud of Champion, who survives him.

Mr. Backus was a brother of the late Erastus P. Backus, who about forty years ago was elected sheriff of St. Lawrence county and was long known in the political life of the county. Erastus Backus went to New York and for several years was there engaged in a social service, making quite a notable record in reclaiming youth that had gone astray. Another brother, Foster L. Backus, a graduate of St. Lawrence University, and later long a distinguished attorney of Brooklyn, served as district attorney of Kings County, NY.

Mr. Backus was a man of fine qualities, most upright and considerate in his dealings with all, a good neighbor and friend.

Besides a widow, he leaves four children, Mrs. S. W. Brown of Canton, Edgar E. Backus of Russell, Arthur G. Backus of Toledo, O., and Miss Jennie Backus of Canton. A fifth child, Mrs. Glenn Morgan of Russell died seven years ago. There also survives a half-sister, Mrs. Eunice Adrian of DeGrasse, and two grandchildren, Miss Gertrude Morgan of Endicott and Miss Grace Morgan of Russell.

Funeral services were held form the late home at 1 Saturday afternoon with the Rev. Matthew D. Sill, pastor of the Canton Methodist church, and the Rev. Samuel F. Johnson of the Ogdensburg Methodist church, a former pastor, and the Rev. F. E. Rundell of Russell, officiating. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery.
