William M. Lyons of Mattapoisett died Saturday, March 5, 2005, at his home. He was 85.
Born in Watertown, he lived in Waltham and Bradenton, Fla., before moving to Mattapoisett.
He was employed with the campus police at MIT for many years, retiring as police captain. He had previously been a police officer with the Waltham Police Department.
Mr. Lyons served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He enjoyed fishing.
Husband of 57 years of the late Regina (Ring) Lyons, he leaves his children, John H. Lyons and Charles E. Lyons, both of Waltham, Thomas J. Lyons of California, Judith A. Lyons of Fairhaven, Mary R. Lyons and Brenda M. Dufresne and her husband, Donald, all of Mattapoisett; a son-in-law, Richard Lieser of California; two sisters, Bernadette Murnaghan of Watertown and Rita Lyons of Waltham; and three grandchildren, Lauren M. Dufresne, Matthew C. Dufresne and Meaghan E. Dufresne.
He was the father of the late Patricia Mary Lyons, Ellen Lieser and William M. Lyons Jr., and the brother of the late Hugh and Mary Murnaghan.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Monday, March 7, at St. Anthony Church in Mattapoisett.
Burial was in St. Anthony's Cemetery in Mattapoisett.
Arrangements were made by the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals.
