| Birth: | Dec. 11, 1882 | | Death: | Sep. 20, 1947 |  Congressmen and progressive Mayor of New York City for three terms (1934-45). Born in New York City, but spent his early years in Eastern Europe. He worked in the American consulates in Budapest, Trieste and Fiume, before returning to the United States 1906 and working on Ellis Island as an interpreter. While working at Ellis Island, attended NYU law School, graduated, and was admitted to the bar in 1910. Opposed the Tamany Hall Democratic regime and political corruption in general. Was nicknamed ‘The Little Flower," and was quite charismatic and a tremendous campaigner. He was particularly famous for reading the funny papers from the newspapers to the city's children over the radio during a newspaper strike during his tenure as mayor. He was the first Italian-American Mayor of New York City, a predicessor to Rudolph Guliani. (bio by: RBT)
